Competing at Nationals

Congratulations on qualifying for the National History Day competition. Nationals takes place in June. All the details about the contest week are available on the National Website. The following is New Hampshire specific information.

What to Expect & Schedules

The NH State Coordinator will need to “advance” the winners from the State contest to the national contest in the days ahead. As soon as that process has occurred, state winners will be able to register for Nationals. Look out for an email from the NHD-NH team giving you the go ahead.

Note for Exhibits and Performances
If you are competing in the Exhibit or Performance category, you and your school are responsible for getting your props and exhibits to Nationals. NHD will send detailed instructions on where and when to ship, but the fees should be paid by you or your school. You can fly with your things, it’s just A LOT to carry on public transport in DC.

Button Trading

There is one thing that makes Nationals very special- trading state buttons. Each student going to Nationals will get a pouch of 55+ buttons that represent the state of New Hampshire, which they will trade between students from all over the U.S, and even the globe. Whether you decide to travel alongside the NHD-NH team or on your own we will have buttons for you, just be sure to find us at the Stamp Union Building on Sunday or Monday for the trading madness to begin.

Statewide Events at Nationals

The faculty and staff at PSU have been to Nationals many times and have an exciting itinerary planned to make the most of the trip. Your school can choose to participate in any of these events.

NHD takes place at the University of Maryland. All the details about the contest week are available on the National Website including meal and lodging options. Please work with your teacher/admin to arrange the details.

CODE OF CONDUCT
It is the expectation of Plymouth State University and the State Coordinators that schools and participants abide by the following rules:

  • Schools are responsible for ensuring an appropriate ratio of students to chaperones. PSU faculty and staff chaperones should be a bonus and enable us to break into smaller groups, but should not be essential to the group's travel. Please examine school policies for field trips to determine that ratio.

  • Students will have a school-approved adult chaperone over 21 that accompanies them on their travel to and from Nationals.

  • High School students will be permitted to go on excursions together in groups. Middle School students must always have an adult chaperone.

  • Students will join with the delegation for all activities outlined in the Itinerary below so that our team can better keep track of everyone.

  • Students should be willing to take in same gender who may be traveling alone.

Estimated Costs per Student:
Flights: $310 or Car: $100
Metrocard: $20
Food: $200
Lodging and Meal Package 2: $460 per person *see www.nhd.org/contest
