INSTRUCTIONS:
Click on the name of each historical figure below.  Complete the written activity for each of the figures on a separate piece of paper. Then respond to the question, "In your opinion, what is the proper pace of change?"

Malcolm X

(right) Malcolm X was a Muslim minister and human rights activist.  His philosophy differed from King's non-violent one.  Many accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, antisemitism, and violence.

Orval faubus

(right) Orval Eugene Faubus was the 36th Governor of Arkansas, serving from 1955 to 1967. He is best known for his 1957 stand against the desegregation of Little Rock public schools during the Little Rock Nine.

Bull Conner

(right) Eugene "Bull" Conner was the Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement.  He is remembered for his use of force, police dogs, and fire hoses against peaceful demonstrators.

Martin Luther KIng Jr.

(left) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, and leader in the  Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent methods.

Rosa Parks

(left) Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an African-American civil rights activist.  She is best known for refusing to move to the back of the bus for a white person, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

George Wallace

(left) George Corley Wallace Jr. was governor of Alabama, elected in 1962.  He is known for his attempt to halt desegregation at the University of Alabama.  He stood in front of the door to the university auditorium, blocking the path for two black students: Vivian Malone and James Hood.  This became known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door."
